Yeagers Antiques - Midway, KY

Duane Yeager, proprieter of Yeager's Antiques, not only sells antiques, but is also an artist. Yeager transforms antique pottery jugs into unusual art forms by applying unfired clay and natural materials. His artistry is reminicent of work created by African American slaves in the early 1840's. His art is currently being exhibited at the Headley-Whitney Museum in Lexington through March 19, 2006.

His shop at 114 N. Winter St. in Midway, offers stoneware, early glass, historical books, early folk art, baskets, tins and toys. While visiting with him a few days ago, Duane pointed out the "$5.00 for Whining" sign in his window. We were talking about people with chronic illnesses. He said that his wife of 30+ years had had a chronic illness and never, ever complained. "So if she could get up every morning and put one foot in front of the other...the rest of us have nothing to whine about!" A sentiment to which I think we could all agree.

Rice & May of Midway

Rice and May of Midway (my favoritess Antique store in Midway) will soon be known as May and Company. It has been owned and run for years by my friends Patsy Rice and Mary May Sayre. Patsy has recently decided to retire, so the new sign will go up very soon and the sole proprietress will be Mary Sayre. Mary was the first person I met when I came to Midway for my interview at the college. She immediately took me under her wing and introduced me to people and gave me tips on finding a place to live. Mary knows NO strangers.

The shop was originally built as a bank and later held the Midway Post Office from 1908-1915. This collection of antiques is rather eclectic. You'll be able to find everything from furniture to crystal. And if Mary doesn't have what you want, she'll help you find it!
